Periodic Testing for Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)

A formal periodic inspection is required to ensure all electrical installations are legally compliant and providing views as to whether the work is in a satisfactory enough condition to be used safely.  The result of the periodic testing is called an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report). The laws and requirements governing electrical periodic inspections and testing:

If your business has not had an initial verification and does not perform periodic tests at least every 5 years some of the risks are:

  • A fine of £5,000 per item not conforming
  • Imprisonment of up to 6 months
  • Invalid insurance
  • Corporate Manslaughter charges
  • Civil action for damages

The electrical installation condition report  is usually conducted at 20% of the installation per year resulting in a 100% test every 5 years.

Defect reports will be issued on completion each year and are as follows:

  • Code C1 ‘Danger present’. Risk of injury. Immediate remedial action required.
  • Code C2 ‘Potentially dangerous’. Urgent remedial action required
  • Code C3 ‘Improvement recommended’

Following a close inspection of the installation and how it is being used the testing procedure will commence:

  • Checking continuity of protective conductors, including main and supplementary bonding
  • Checking continuity of ring final circuit conductors
  • Insulation resistance
  • Polarity testing
  • Earth fault loop impedance tests
  • Prospective fault current testing
  • RCD testing
  • Phase sequence testing
  • BS 7671 Identify departures from the National standard
  • Overloaded circuit checks
  • Shock risks and hazards
  • Identify defective electrical work
  • Identify any lack of earthing or bonding
  • Portable Appliance Testing
  • Fixed Appliances – equipment supplied via a fixed spur
  • Fixed Installations – the wiring within the building
